However, there are times because of the stresses of life, we snap and accidentally hit our dog.
Most of us will realize what a horrible thing we did. So, how do we fix things again with our beloved pet?
In this article, we are going to cover what you can do if you accidentally hit your dog. Also, later in the article, we are going to cover if it’s okay to hit your dog as a form of discipline.
Dog’s Poing Of View
Before we cover what you can do, let’s first understand what it means for the dog if you hit him/her…
You and your dog have a special bond. Your dog has complete faith and trust in you. If you hit your dog, even if by accident, this will shatter that trust and faith. Here’s what you can do.
What To Do
The moment you hit your dog, he/she will most likely take a defensive or submissive stance. He/she will probably back away from you, and most likely cry/whine.
The first thing to do is to apologize to your dog. Say sorry and hug/kiss/pet him profusely. Even if he/she doesn’t understand the word sorry, but your dog will understand from your voice tone and body language that it was unintentional. Also, it’s best that you give him a treat.
Its is critical that you do this asap. This is to ensure that the incident will not ingrain in your dog’s psyche.
Is It Okay To Hit Your Dog As A Form Of Discipline
Different schools have a different opinion. However, if you want a kind of relationship with your dog that leans towards master/friend, rather than master/subordinate, then you should never hit your dog.
Saying “Bad Dog” in an authoritative voice already has a big impact on your dog. It’s a lot better to discipline your dog in a reward-based system – this means little punishment, but lots of rewards if your dog moves in the right direction.
